Beyond the coffee...into the craft

January 23 2002 marked the first UWS (Upper West Side) Knit Circle
Every Wednesday night we have gathered for two or more hours
in a Manhattan Starbucks,
knitters & crocheters from every borough (except Staten Island),
undaunted by rain, heat, loud music, sleet...

Alison got married
Brenda amazed with British style knitting
Nancy D. gave everyone chocolates from her new business
Miriam had her third child
Julie H. moved to New Jersey--& still came back
Jen finished THE sweater
Stacy brought each of us a fabric charm from Korea
Allana hosted two potluck finishing parties
Lisa D. sold hats and sang
Elaine learned how to do Norwegian purl
Lettie moved to Georgia
Louise made a stylish Noro hat that I hope to copy
Andrea prepared for another winter with a great, green chunky hat
Naomi finished THE vest
Judi went to Paris
Leonora returned
Sue kept on knitting non-stop...

We survived a change to another Starbucks when the first one closed.
We knit in Central Park.
Gave birth to a daytime circle,
Thursdays in Morningside Heights - yes, another Starbucks.
We thank them for chairs, tables, coffee, and employees' good cheer -
especially valued in our public-space-starved city.

It's essential that we be visible, knit in public, volunteer to demonstrate at shows and other events.
This plants seeds which may or may not germinate for a long time but can stimulate non-knitters to pursue the craft.
